Turkey Hunting Tips With Alex Rutledge Of Hunter’s Specialties®
Turkey season is almost here and hunters are beginning to get their gear in order. I asked Alex Rutledge, a Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff member, to give me a few pointers on the spring season.
Q: “Alex, can you give me a few tips on being more successful this spring?”
A: “Part of being a successful turkey hunter is not only calling, but attention to detail. I like to take proper care of my calls so that they sound consistent all the time. If you use a slate call, for instance, sand the call one way so that the striker bites better and you have more control. I always store my diaphragm calls in the refrigerator to keep the reeds in good shape. Give them a good rinse with mouthwash to keep them germ-free and better-tasting as well.”
Q: “What are some things to help me in the field?”
A: “If you are hunting with a buddy, always separate a few feet when using locator calls. This will help you hear more turkeys. Once I have located a bird, I like to use a hen and a Jake decoy to get the gobbler’s attention. When the gobbler sees my set-up, he starts to think, ‘I’m in love and I’m ready to fight’. Now that his attention is on the decoys, I can get away with a little more movement if I have to. Of course this works best on dominant turkeys.”
Q: “What is the best call to use?”
A: “All types of calls have their place. Box calls are great for calling during windy conditions; glass calls are often high-pitched and cause gobblers to respond; slate calls produce great soft purrs and yelps. I really like diaphragm calls because you can make all the sounds of the wild turkey and they are hands-free, so you don’t have to worry about movement. That is what makes them great for closing the deal when the bird is almost in range. I also like to do a soft yelp or two when I click the safety off on my gun to cover the noise. The truth is any call, when used properly, can call in a turkey on any given day. ”
Q: “Where can hunters go to learn more?”
A: “They can visit our website at www.hunterspec.com.”
